Film Review: Happy Death Day 2U

The year is 2017. Blumhouse was about to deliver its best year creatively. Get Out had the world buzzing, deservedly so, but there was another film that snuck up and was one of the most fun horror films to come out in a long time.

Happy Death Day was smart in its sense of humour and creativity in dealing with the Groundhog Day scenario. When a sequel was announced I had no idea where the series could go but director Christopher Landon did and in Happy Death Day 2U he has created one of the best horror sequels of the 21st century.

It’s hard to talk about Happy Death Day 2U as so much is going on in the film and almost every scene discussed could spoil some neat twist the movie throws at the audience.

What I will say is that the film can be very familiar with scenes playing out similar to the first film but this movie brings so many new ideas into this world you will not be bored. The thing I love most about this film is that while a huge part of the first film was the mystery of the killer, this film still has a mysterious killer, but that plot line is so far in the background that when the killer is revealed you don’t even care who it is by then. You’re more focused on whether Tree and her friends get out of the film safely.

New cast members are a welcome addition while returning characters are fleshed out even more. Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman continues to show that she may be giving the best performance in a horror film ever. That may sound like hyperbole but I truly believe Rothe is giving a truly great performance that enhances your investment in the film.

Overall I adore this series and will be more than happy to see a third film if made:
